 about the college

originally established as m h college of home science in the year 1954, it was bifurcated in the year 1987 (01/01/1987) and came into independent existence as government mb arts & commerce, college for women, at jabalpur. 


status of the college


the college is affiliated to the rani durgavati university of jabalpur and is recognized by the ugc under section 2 (f) (06-11-1988) and 12 (b) (06-11-1988) of the ugc act of 1956. it was conferred autonomous status by the ugc in the year 1990 (27/12/1990) the college has progressed to become one of the leading women colleges in the country. it was accredited by the national assessment and accreditation council in the year 2004 and was conferred a+ grade and subsequently cycle assessment took place in september 2014 and the college has been accredited with a grade in december 2014.

the college is located in the heart of the city on a campus of 3.13 acres of land. the college offers 06 programmes in all. there are 03 under graduate, 02 post graduate programmes in the faculty of arts and commerce and 01 pg diploma programme. the college offers 03 self-financing subjects at ug level. the college has pg in 13 subjects.

the college provides comprehensive information to the students about its goals and objectives, admission rules, courses offered, fee structure and the available facilities through its prospectus, calendar and website. the total learner strength of the college in the year 2018-19 is of 2897 girl students.


faculty details 

at present the college has 69 permanent teachers and 11 guest faculty.  teachers are well qualified with 67 teachers holding ph.d as the highest degree.




the college promotes a research culture among the teaching staff and students. this comprises enhancement of the infrastructural facilities, expansion of the library facilities, setting up smart classes, subscription to more research journals, provision of free access to internet etc. this ict enabled culture facilitates the research endeavor of the teachers and scholars. 


the college has research center in music, drawing & painting and urdu recognised by rani durgawati university, jabalpur (m.p.)


the automated central library has a collection of 62,535 books, and it subscribes to 18 journals and 30 magazines. during the last four years the college spent rs. 12,53,612/- and in the current year rs. 6,82,685/- on the purchase of books and journals. 




the college has sufficient infrastructure for the existing academic programmes and administrative functions. the college has campus area spread over 3.13 acres of land. there are altogether 75 classrooms along with auditorium, conference halls, student&rsquos common room, computer laboratories, automated library, 13 departmental libraries, departments with basic infrastructure. there is public address system in all the class rooms, cc tv cameras. the entire infrastructure is well maintained under the supervision of the hods and principal of the college with the assistance of the maintenance committee. the infrastructure is optimally utilized as the college works in two shifts to facilitate the commerce and the arts classes. the college has adequate computer facility and a language lab used for academic and administrative purposes.


the college has a joint hostel in govt. m.h. college of home science situated just opposite the college building to accommodate students of this college. this joint hostel is provided with all basic amenities. the college also has hostel in its premises for tribal students. the college has adequate infrastructure for sports and games. it has one multipurpose field for athletics, volleyball, and kho-kho and indoor facility for chess, carom and -tennis. college also facilitates special training in martial arts judo karate and wushu. gymnasium, new canteen, auditorium, ramp and washroom for the differently abled persons, are available in the college. sanitary napking vending machine and incicrator have been installed in the college. 




the iqac of the college has created quality consciousness in the college ever since its inception in 2004. the ugc cell, iqac and swami vivekanand career counseling & placement cell have successfully organized a number of seminars, conferences workshops and career fairs for the welfare of the students. five clubs have been established under iqac for the overall development of the students. the iqac provides personal counseling to the students. one full time trained counselor has been employed to help the students overcome various problems relating to examination stress and other academic and personal issues. the college has also strengthened counseling and placement services with the establishment of ugc career counseling cell, as well as &ldquoswami vivekanand career counseling and placement cell&rdquo. the placement cell offers training and development programmes to the students and prepares the students for campus interview for employment in the industry and other organizations. all the faculty members are involved in providing academic and personal counseling through the teacher- guardian scheme available to all the students.


extension activities


the college regularly takes up extension activities and various types of outreach programmes through its departments, ncc, nss and red cross units to inculcate social concern and responsibility in the minds of the students. the ncc and nss units of the college conduct programmes in collaboration with government and ngos for the community development, women empowerment, literacy and promotion of national spirit, peace and harmony. 


the other student support services include grievance redressal cell, anti women-sexual harassment cell, women development cell, student cell, anti ragging committee, remedial classes, sports and research cell.


the college has a well-defined and de-centralized organizational structure to coordinate the academic and administrative functions of the institution. the organizational structure consists of statutory bodies like the executive council, academic council, board of studies, and finance committee. the principal is the head of the college who provides leadership and inspiration in planning, organization and execution of all programmes with the active support and participation of the staff. he maintains healthy contact with the stakeholders like parents, teachers, alumni and the public. 


the academic planning of various departments is carried out by the respective bos, with the approval of academic council. the meeting of the statutory bodies is convened at least once in a year.


the college is dedicated to turn its vision and mission into reality by putting in sincere efforts in all the spheres of academic, co-curricular and administrative activities.
