govt. madhav college ujjian, the oldest education institution of higher education department , was established in 1890. it has emerged as a constantly progressing institution and attained  new heights. in the beginning in the year 1888 it was established as ujjain high school, in 1819 as inter college and in 1893 till gradutation it was affiliated to allahabad university. presently it is affiliated to vikram university ujjain. this institution was named after late gwalior king madhav rao sindhiya. pandit bapu narayan dhekne who was student and classmate of sri lokmanya gangadhar tilak was appointed as the first principal of this institution. the legacy was passed on the numerous reverend acadmicians like shri vasudev krishn tatke, shri n b paradkar, shri vv g dani, dr. shivmangal singh suman. presently dr. hemant namdeo is the principal of the college. the main object of the institution is to provide quality education to wide range of students belonging to the different socio-cultural backgrounds. apart from conventional courses b.a.,b.com.,m.a. and m.com.,the college runs self financing courses in m.s.w.,m.a.english litrature, public administration, b.a. and b.com.computer application.this institution is a recognised research centre in 8 subjects where research work is done by research scolars under the guidance of college academicians. from past till persent this college is running different academic, literary and sports activities on college level, stste level and national level under the guidance of able and efficient professors. in the year 1998-1999 the institution celebrated shatabdi samaroh. in this ceremony the former principals, professors and thousands of students participated and made this occasion successful. on this occasion a magazine named shatabdi madhavika was published which covered and assembled memories of 107 years of this institution. history speaks that this institution has invited and honoured many great and renouned personalities like anne besant, pt. jwaharlal nehru, dr. rajendra prasad etc.
